Arcade Game: Robotron 2084 (1982 Williams)

A field type shooting ’em up game where it’s set in the year 2084, Robotron is a single-screen shoot-em-up in which super-intelligent self-aware robots known as ‘Robotrons’ – designed and built to help mankind – have revolted against their creators and vowed to either reprogram the humans into Robotrons or, failing this, wipe-out the human race entirely.
The player must destroy the robots and rescue the Earth’s remaining human families. The player’s only weapon is a multi-directional Anti-Robot Laser Gun. Used effectively, it will give players the power to destroy all the Robot waves, with the exception of the indestructible ‘Hulk’ unit.
At the start of the attack wave, players will have three chances to wipe out the enemy and advance to the next wave. Every 25, 000 points players are granted another chance to complete their mission.
MAN, WOMAN, CHILD : These are the only three types of human clones left on Earth. Defenseless and easy prey to the Robots, they are totally dependent upon players for their survival and will wander aimlessly until the player makes contact with them. Touching them will place them under the player’s protective powers and earn them the following points: 1,000 for rescuing the 1st human; 2,000 for the 2nd: 3,000 for the 3rd; 4,000 for the 4th; 5,000 for the 5th; and 5,000 for every additional human saved. At the beginning of each new wave and when the player loses a turn, rescue scoring will again begin at 1,000.

Note: Invincibility cheat was used when down to last life. The game is endless. The game crashed towards the end when trying to play as many levels as I can caused by the cheat.

This was the only video game I ever clocked by completing all levels. No special reward, it just starts over at wave 1 again. Took me hours. Good value for a quarter!

Let's just hope that 2084 doesn't play out like this…

I guess this is the danger of having a god mode…you never actually learn how to play well

This was my game back in the day. I've never seen invincibility as displayed in this video where Robotron walks straight through a crowd of Hulks, Grunts or Quark Swarm without being terminated.

"If it were possible to achieve Zen nirvana through hand-eye coordination, then Robotron would be the ultimate instrument of enlightenment. A good Robotron player on a roll is a thing of beauty: two joysticks against the world…..no side-scrolling, no magic foe generator off-screen; all of your enemies are present and attacking from the word go. It's best to shut off your thinking brain and let instinct take over. You must succumb to a hyper-kinetic state of meditation if you want to beat Robotron."

–from the history of Robotron on the classic "Arcade's Greatest Hits" PS1 collection. This was one of the first games I bought when I got a PlayStation in 1996, and I have never forgotten than quote,

Around 22:00 you'll see this person's true skill level, when the other objects on the screen can actually kill him. There's other videos where the person playing is playing for real, and getting millions of points. Plus one where only five men total were allowed, no extra men, and he still got to 800,000 or 900,000.

Robotron was a inspiration for Postal. I don't knew that before after reading that information on wikipedia.

DJ Premier also used a lot of these sound effects on his classic jams. Shout out to that man!

One of the best arcade games ever. The sound effects and fast paced action. I love the sound it made whenever you grabbed a human and when you shot the indestructible hulks. Thanks for the memories YouTube!

Does the game send you to the next level sometimes before all enemies destroyed?

How did you get the “no kill” setting? Robotron 2084 was my favorite (still is, actually) and your survival on the game is clearly because of some electronic gimmickry. If you have to cheat to play the game, what’s the point?

The one game that teaches you that you can't save everyone and to save yourself at the same time..great hand/eye coordinator though.

Close your ears, but I used to get stoned and would play this game all damn night. I was constantly the highest scoring for some time. This was in 1981-82. First time I’ve seen this game since then! Thanks!!

This and Defender are probably the two best Williams cabinets ever. The Robotron cabinet had two joysticks for controls. One moved the player, one fired the player's weapon in different directions. Brilliant in it's simplicity. And those controls took some heavy abuse when things got hectic in later rounds.

I went to an arcade in my area recently and out of all the games this one was by far my favorite game; especially when you advanced to the next wave when the color block transitions come in!

I remember this so well going to the arcade in the early 80’s. This was one of the games that drew you in by the sounds. They always had the volume on max in the arcade. No other way to play it 😬

Loved this game. Hard as F. Playing 2up was awesome. If you could reach the second tank wave you were doing really well. I dont remember the collision detection being this bad though. ;-p

I spent a whole summer getting good at this until I could 'clock' it which means after 9,999,975 the score would roll over to zero. Also after Wave 255 it would go back to the very first screen. I got so good that I would have a crowd watching me but then the arcade manager would switch the machine off, and increase the difficulty setting which made me get better and better. It got so I needed to tape my fingers up because I got blisters on my 2nd fingers and then the skin would come off! MAME is great to play it again years later but it's not the same without those large joysticks! Happy memories (I'm over 50 now)!
